CMS Administrator Seema Verma announced on Monday, Aug. 19 that CMS will update the hospital star rating methodology in early 2021. She stated that CMS’s goal is to empower patients to make informed healthcare decisions, thereby creating competition between providers on the basis of cost and quality. She reiterated that transparency for patients is key.

Specific details were not included in the announcement; however, CMS stated that it will propose such details via public rulemaking some time in 2020. The CMS Administrator also announced that CMS will refresh the star ratings on Hospital Compare in early 2020, using the current methodology.

The announcement regarding restructuring of the rating procedure comes after CMS received more than 800 comments following a public input request it issued six months ago seeking feedback on how ratings can be improved.
