Gerald Walter’s practice from 1962 to 1980 primarily involved the defense of insurance companies and their insureds.  His primary insurance clients were CNA and the Hartford Insurance Groups.  Litigation handled by Mr. Walter included the defense of a variety of claims, which included product liability, malpractice of professionals (architects, engineers and physicians), and commercial litigation. 

Beginning in 1978, Mr. Walter became involved in the representation of clients in environmental matters. Since 1980, Mr. Walter has been engaged in all facets of environmental law (regulatory interpretation and guidance, permitting of all types of facilities, defense of enforcement actions, participation in Superfund matters, etc.), as well as significant commercial litigation. 

Some of these matters have included:

          • Attorney in charge of obtaining permit for first commercial hazardous waste land disposal facility in Louisiana (from acquisition of land through all phases of permit acquisition and associated litigation); 
          • Attorney in charge of all phases of the acquisition and permitting of non-hazardous land disposal facilities, transfer stations and pick-up stations throughout Louisiana, as well as the defense of administrative and judicial challenges to permits; 
          • Development of legislative and regulatory initiatives for environmental clients, including creation of proposed legislation and regulatory changes; 
          • Monitoring, opposing, supporting and/or modifying proposed legislation and regulations on behalf of environmental clients; 
          • Representation of environmental clients in litigation and administrative matters.  Litigation matters have included RCRA and CERCLA matters, disputes with federal, state, and municipal governments, contract issues, toxic tort claims and nuisance claims.  Administrative matters have included LDEQ, USEPA, and LDNR issues from negotiation to dispute resolution through administrative processes;
          • Contract development and negotiation related to environmental and business clients.
