Tax Update December 2016
Property Taxes
As a result of the August floods, many properties in the affected areas had to be reassessed and property tax bills have been delayed. These property taxes may not be due until 2017. It is important to note that for 2016 federal income tax purposes, you can only deduct those real estate taxes paid in 2016. Please check with your parish tax assessor or sheriff's office to determine if you can pay your taxes by the end of 2016 in order to claim the deduction on your 2016 income tax return.
In East Baton Rouge parish, the sheriff's office will mail property tax bills on January 1, 2017, and no penalties or interest will be charged until after January 31st. The properties have been assessed, and you can view and pay your assessment online, by mail, or in person at the Sheriff's office.
o You can search by Notice #/Assessment #, Parcel #, Taxpayer Name, or Legal description. You do not need your assessment in order to view and pay the bill.
o Through the EBR Sheriff you can opt to pay the bill online. There is a "convenience fee" associated with paying online. The fee to pay using a bank draft is nominal ($1), but the fee to use a debit or credit card is 3.45% of the balance.
