Taylor Porter Partner and Diversity Committee Chair Katia Bowman has become the first registered Haitian Creole Language court interpreter for the Louisiana Supreme Court. In Louisiana, a court interpreter is listed as “registered” in the language for which he/she tested if the interpreter completes a two day training course, passes a standard written English examination as provided by the National Center for State Courts, passes a written translation examination, and agrees to be bound by Part G, Section 14 of the General Administrative Rules for all Louisiana Courts.

The Louisiana Supreme Court designates certified and registered court interpreters in several languages, including: French, Mandarin, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, Laotian, Amharic, Arabic, German, Italian, Polish, Portugese, Thai, and Sign Language.

Born and raised in Haiti, Bowman arrived in Baton Rouge in 2001 on a full academic scholarship to Southern University, where she graduated summa cum laude with a political science degree in 2005. She had the highest GPA in her department that year, which earned her a full scholarship to Southern University Law Center. In 2008, she graduated magna cum laude and began her career at Taylor Porter. She now leads the firm’s diversity committee and volunteers in the community with the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, Volunteers in Public Schools and Cristo Rey Baton Rouge Franciscan High School. She’s also a board member of IDEA Public Schools Louisiana.

Bowman practices primarily civil and appellate litigation. She has defended the interests of public and private clients in personal injury, insurance defense, contract disputes, public utilities, unfair trade practice, civil rights, education, retaliation, defamation, wrongful termination, discrimination, and general tort matters.

In 2016, Bowman was named among the "Top Forty Under 40" by the Baton Rouge Business Report for her professional and community achievements.
