Groves Lowe, Parker Successfully Represent State in Motor-Vehicle Collision Case

February 21, 2020

Representing the State of Louisiana as a defendant in a motor-vehicle collision case, Taylor Porter partners Amy Groves Lowe and John Parker obtained an outstanding verdict for their client. The five-day jury trial in the 19th JDC ended with the State being deemed at fault for only 10 percent of the damages in a complicated case. Despite the plaintiff requesting $30 million in special damages, plus general damages, the jury awarded a total of $2.5 million.

The State, through the Department of Children and Family Services, and a foster mother were named defendants in a case involving a motor vehicle accident that resulted in brain injury to a two-month old foster child. In a case that began 13 years ago in 2007, Groves Lowe and Parker took over as counsel for the State after much of the discovery had already taken place. Despite plaintiff’s refusal to produce any updated medical or educational records, Groves Lowe and Parker were able to convince the jury that the absence of information regarding plaintiff’s current functioning failed to support the request for damages.

At Taylor Porter, Groves Lowe has a litigation practice in various areas of law, including insurance defense, education law, administrative law, appellate practice, and church property law, while Parker focuses on insurance coverage and defense litigation, public utilities, personal injury and commercial litigation.
