June 07, 2016

Taylor Porter attorneys John McDermott and Erin Sayes Kenny, both board members of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Baton Rouge, participated in the organization's annual Passport to Manhood Luncheon, held April 15, 2016, at City Club of Baton Rouge, and also the Girls at the Table event, held at the Main Library on April 22, 2016. The events were featured in the Boys & Girls Club newsletter, "Club Times." McDermott serves as Chairman of the Board of Governors, while Kenny is a board of trustees member.

James Gilmore, Director of th Children's Cabinet at the Office of the Governor of Louisiana, was the keynote speaker at Passport to Manhood, while Jacqui Vines, Senior Vice President and General Manager at COX Communications, was the keynote speaker at Girls at the Table.

Passport to Manhood consists of 14 sessions, each concentrating on a specific aspect of character and manhood through highly interactive activities. Each Club participant receives his own “passport” to underscore the notion that he is on a personal journey of maturation and growth. The program includes a service project where boys learn the importance of giving back to the community. Passport to Manhood represents a targeted effort to engage young boys in discussions and activities that reinforce character, leadership and positive behavior.

At the Girls at the Table event, each woman is asked to bring a bound journal as a gift for their assigned Club member. Inside the journal she should write a note of encouragement or a quote that is inspirational. At the Luncheon, women leaders are seated next to a female Boys & Girls Club Member who is participating in the SMARTGirls Program. The SMARTGirls Program offers guidance toward healthy attitudes and lifestyles, eating right, staying fit, getting good health care, and more. Encouraging young women to have healthy attitudes and lifestyles, SMARTGirls helps them reach their full potential. Through dynamix sessions, group activities, field trips, and mentoring opportunities with adult women, Club girls enjoy the opportunity to build skills for eating right, staying physically fit, getting good health care, and developing relationships.
