This week, Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack made a disaster designation giving farmers in certain parishes the option to get Farm Service Agency (FSA) assistance, including emergency loans, according to United States Senator David Vitter's office. These loans can cover losses of crops, trees, livestock, farm land and property. Parishes included in this week’s declaration include Acadia, Ascension, Cameron, Evangeline, Iberia, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, St. James, St. Landry, St. Martin, and Vermilion parishes.
Secretary Vilsack also named a handful of parishes as contiguous disaster areas, making some recovery resources available for folks in Allen, Assumption, Avoyelles, Beauregard, Iberville, Calcasieu, Lafourche, Pointe Coupee, Rapides, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary, East Baton Rouge, or Livingston parishes, too.
FSA will consider each emergency loan application on a case-by-case basis, taking into account production losses on the farm and the security and repayment ability of the operator.
