Taylor Porter Among 17 Businesses to Partner in Inaugural Cristo Rey Corporate Work Study Program

July 29, 2016

Cristo Rey Baton Rouge Franciscan High School, a new, private Catholic high school, will open its doors on Aug. 8, and begin its inaugural, innovative mission of combining college preparatory education with a Corporate Work Study program for high school students, and today, the inaugural class of ninth graders found out their workplace destinations through a national Cristo Rey tradition of “Draft Day.”

Seventeen businesses from the Baton Rouge area attended the event this morning held at Catholic Life Center as students were introduced on stage with their workplace employers, and were cheered on by their families, friends, faculty and administration at Cristo Rey. The event was emceed by WBRZ anchor Sylvia Weatherspoon and retired City of Baton Rouge Police Chief Jeff LeDuff.

Taylor Porter is among the 17 businesses to participate in the program, and the law firm will employ students Jadarion Davis, Mejia Osmin, Sheldreka Murphy and Maxon Wallace, over the next school year. Taylor Porter Managing Partner Skip Philips is a member of the Cristo Rey Baton Rouge board of directors.

As a result of working in a business environment, students create positive relationships in the business and professional communities, build their resources, acquire valuable job experience and marketable skills, develop a network of business contacts and gain exposure to a wide range of career opportunities.

Employers assume the role of an employee leasing agency. Students are not on the payroll of the employing organization, rather they are employees of the school’s separately incorporated Corporate Work Study Program, which the sponsoring organization pays annually for the services of the students. Every Cristo Rey student takes a full course load of college preparatory coursework for four years, as he or she participates one day each week in a four-year Corporate Work Study Program to fund the majority of their tuition. Their academic schedules are structured so that students work without missing any classes.

Additional companies participating in the corporate work study program, along with Taylor Porter, include Albemarle Corporation, All Star Automotive Group, The Baton Rouge Clinic, Baton Rouge General, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, Capital Area Finance Authority, Essential Credit Union, Kean Miller, Lamar Advertising, Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI), Neighbors Federal Credit Union, Ochsner, Our Lady of the Lake College, Our Lady of the Lake Health System, Postlethwaite & Netterville, and YMCA of the Capital Area.
