Taylor Porter Holds Welcome Reception for Southern, LSU Law Center Leaders

Taylor Porter was proud to host a welcome reception for both Southern Law Center Chancellor John Pierre and LSU Law Center Dean Tom Galligan, held Nov. 17 on the law firm's newly renovated 8th floor terrace overlooking downtown Baton Rouge.

Pierre has been on the law faculty of the Southern University Law Center since 1990, and in 2016, he was appointed chancellor of the law center, prior to which time he served for a year as interim chancellor. Before becoming head of the law center, Pierre served as vice chancellor since 2006 in charge of institutional accountability and the evening division.

Professor Pierre has previous teaching experience as a visiting and adjunct professor at California State University, Southern Methodist University School of Law, Loyola University Law School, Southern University College of Business, Saint Leo’s College, Webster University, Louisiana State University, and Baton Rouge Community College. He received the bachelor’s degree in accounting from Southern University in 1980, a master’s degree in tax accounting from Texas Tech University in 1982, and a juris doctor degree from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1985.

Pierre has published numerous articles on tax law, sales and contracts, real estate and commercial law, ranging from magazine features to legal journal and law review articles. Pierre is a member of numerous state and national organizations, including the Louisiana State Bar Association and the Texas Bar Association.

Galligan was named Dean of the LSU Law Center, effective July 1. Prior to being named Dean, Galligan served as the president of Colby-Sawyer College, and as dean and the Elvin E. Overton Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Tennessee College of Law, where he also taught torts and admiralty. He also taught at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center at LSU, where he was named the Dr. Dale E. Bennett Professor of Law and was honored by the students as the Outstanding LSU Professor six times. He has served as a member and chair of the American Bar Association Accreditation Committee and is a frequent continuing legal education speaker on his areas of expertise. He holds an A.B. from Stanford University, a J.D. from the University of Puget Sound (now Seattle University) School of Law and a L.L. M. from the Columbia University Law School.
