June 06, 2016

Taylor Porter is proud of its annual summer associate program, which hires highly motivated, well-rounded law students to participate in two, six-week sessions. Under the guidance of practicing attorneys, our summer associates gain hands-on experience and interaction that reflect real life as a lawyer. During the first summer session of 2016, Taylor Porter has eight summer associates, and our law firm is proud to profile these eight students and gain their insight from the Taylor Porter summer associate program.

Hillary Brouillette, LSU Law, Class of 2018 (with mentors Megan Bice Barrett, Associate, and Bob Barton, Partner)

Hebert Scholar Award and has received several CALI awards, including in Civil Procedure II in Spring 2016; Contracts I tutor in Fall 2016; and Legal Research and Writing I in Fall 2015. Hillary graduated with a bachelor of science in economics and a minor in communications studies from LSU.

What practice area(s) are you most interested in and why?

I have yet to be drawn in one direction or another, but having only completed my first year of law school thus far, I anticipate something catching my eye and changing that in the coming years. I would like to utilize my economics degree in my practice, but that seems to be a possibility in everything from torts to business transactions. One reason I love Taylor Porter is that there does not seem to be any pressure to find one area — either during a clerkship or career with the firm. I have worked on topics ranging from mortgage reinscriptions to investigatory stops during my short time here.

How has the Taylor Porter summer law clerk program helped prepare you for becoming a lawyer?

Being able to attend a hearing during my second week at Taylor Porter was an exciting experience that gave me new insight into litigation. Watching great litigators in action highlighted the importance of powerful and effective communication in practice that will stay with me long after law school.

Who are your Taylor Porter attorney mentors and what have you learned from them about the legal field that will stick with you?

My mentors, Bob Barton and Megan Bice, have taught me about professionalism by example and advised me about working in a law firm. It has been great to work for attorneys that are so willing to answer questions and freely give both professional and personal advice about life in the legal field outside of law school.

What do you like best about the TP Summer Associate Program?

I admire and appreciate how the Summer Associate Program has made me feel like a part of the firm. I was told to treat the office as if it were my own and to feel like a part of the Taylor Porter team on the first day of work, and that notion has continued through my time here. The culture here makes you feel like you and your work are valued as another piece of the firm.
