Halphen, Thames Present at LAMMICO Defense Counsel Seminar

Taylor Porter Partners and Health Care Practice Team members Ann Halphen and Adam Thames served as speakers at the LAMMICO Defense Counsel Seminar, held Aug. 20 at the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort. LAMMICO is a policyholder-owned malpractice insurance company that provides comprehensive medical professional and general liability coverage. LAMMICO is the largest medical malpractice insurance company in Louisiana and the only "A" (Excellent) rated medical professional liability insurance carrier in Louisiana that writes hospitals and facilities.  

Halphen, joined by Dr. James "Jim" Rhorer - Medical Director of Emergency Services for Our Lady of the Lake, presented on “Risk Arising from Management of Advanced Practice Providers in the Emergency Department”. Thames presented on "Recapping Negligent Credentialing," and he was joined by Dr. Patrick Torcson, of St. Tammany Health System; and Patrick Seiter, of Woman's Hospital.

Halphen has extensive experience handling professional liability, general insurance, and health care-related matters. In addition, Halphen has had significant successes in defending hospitals in medical staff privilege, qui tam and peer review disputes, including HCQIA defenses and EMTALA claims. Halphen also has particular experience with arbitrating contracts through the American Health Lawyers Association including physician recruitment and employment agreements. Halphen represents several homeowner insurance companies on coverage issues, and defends on liability and property damage disputes. Halphen currently represents large multi-specialty clinics and their affiliates and employees, including physicians, hospitals, and emergency room physicians throughout the state. In addition, Halphen has appeared before professional licensing boards including the Board of Pharmacy, the Registered Nursing Board, the Licensed Practical Nursing Board, and the Louisiana Board of Medical Examiners. Halphen has been a guest speaker at several seminars and presents updates every year on recent law changes and significant case law at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center. She has been selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers in the field of Health Care Law. 

Thames devotes a significant portion of his practice to representing physicians, hospitals, nurses, dialysis clinics, urgent care clinics, and other health care providers in medical malpractice and other professional liability claims. He has extensive experience litigating class action, products liability, personal injury, premises liability, and insurance defense claims. Thames has represented clients before the Louisiana Public Service Commission, Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors, and Louisiana Office of Workers’ Compensation.  Thames has been ranked by his peers among the Louisiana Super Lawyers "Rising Stars" in Medical Malpractice Defense, and also in Best Lawyers in America in Commercial Litigation. Thames is a board member of the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel.  He currently serves as vice chair of the Taylor Porter’s Recruiting Committee. Thames is a contributing author to Health Care Journal of Baton Rouge, ​LHA (Louisiana Hospital Association) Impact Lawbrief​, LAMMICO News and Insights newsletter, and the Baton Rouge Lawyer, the magazine of the Baton Rouge Bar Association.
