Rick J. Norman, Jr.

Special Counsel

Taylor Porter Special Counsel Rick Norman, who formerly founded the Norman Business Law Center in Lake Charles, has represented southwest Louisiana business and industry clients for 35 years. Rick leads the Taylor Porter Lake Charles office and practices in commercial litigation, labor and employment, construction, healthcare, and transactions. He regularly serves as an expert witness testifying as to the appropriateness of attorney’s fees in commercial litigation.

Rick is the author of two legal treatises on business law used by both practitioners and in law schools: Louisiana Employment (Thomson Reuters, 1083 pages, updated annually) and Louisiana Corporations (Thomson Reuters, 2051 pages, updated annually).

Designed to help both employers and employees, 
Employment Law (Louisiana Practice Series) provides an understanding of the legislative and jurisprudential employment law activism brought on as both a cause and result of a changing workplace. It identifies, organizes, and analyzes developments regarding the employment relationship in Louisiana, and it covers employment liability and contracts, discrimination, compensation and payment, employee benefits, leaves of absence, and safety issues.


Louisiana Corporations is an informational guide to the practice of business organization law in Louisiana. It serves as a quick reference on Louisiana corporate law at all stages of corporate existence and provides:

  • Legal requirements, from incorporation to dissolution


Rick has served on the Employment Law Advisory Commission for the Louisiana State Bar Association Board of Legal Specialization. Rick has extensive litigation experience and was formerly a federal prosecutor for white collar crime. Rick has tried cases in many state and federal courts, including the United States Tax Court.

Rick enjoys an “AV” rating from the Martindale-Hubbell rating agency, which is the highest rating given for ability and ethics. Rick is a “Top Rated Lawyer” in the field of litigation as determined by Martindale-Hubbell, and he was selected a "Top Rated Lawyer" in the field of commercial litigation by Acadiana Profile Magazine.

Rick is currently the vice president of the Louisiana State Law Institute, an arm of the Louisiana legislature that studies and drafts legislation. He also serves on Law Institute committees rewriting the Louisiana Wage Payment Act and the Louisiana Limited Liability Companies Law. He formerly served on the committee that rewrote the Louisiana Business Corporations Law in 2015.

Rick taught business entities law and employment law at McNeese State University for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on business law topics, and he contributed a chapter for a college textbook on the effect of the First Amendment on business.

Rick served as an ethics committee chairman for the Louisiana Bar Association from 1995-1999. He currently serves as a court-appointed Special Master in the 14th Judicial District Court.

Rick is active in the Lake Charles community, performing various pro bono work for several entities, including serving on the Governmental Ethics Board, City of Lake Charles, Louisiana (1990-1993); Chairman, Ethics Committee for Louisiana Bar Association (1995-1999); and City of Lake Charles Personnel Board (2007-2019).
