Tara Bourgeois focuses her practice primarily on the defense of medical malpractice claims and healthcare litigation. She defends physicians and other medical professionals, as well as physician groups and physician-owned clinics, surgery centers and specialty hospitals, in all aspects of malpractice claims, including medical review panel proceedings, lawsuits, trials and appeals. She also represents physicians before the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners and peer review committees and in licensing and credentialing matters. Tara’s practice also includes advising health care providers regarding risk management, regulatory compliance and healthcare administration.
As a litigator, Tara has successfully defended physicians, other medical professionals and physician-owned surgery centers and specialty hospitals in more than 45 jury and non-jury trials and in more than 600 medical review panel proceedings in Louisiana. Tara also has extensive appellate court experience in the Louisiana Courts of Appeal and in the Louisiana Supreme Court.
In addition to her litigation practice, Tara frequently presents seminars to physicians, other medical professionals and medical practice managers on risk management and medical legal issues. She has also presented lectures on a variety of medical legal topics and conducted mock trials for medical residents and fellows. She has appeared before the Louisiana Legislature to testify on medical malpractice issues.
Tara received her J.D. from Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1999 and her B.A., summa cum laude, from Louisiana State University in 1996. While in law school, she was a Robert Lee Tullis Moot Court Competition Finalist and a member of the Appellate Advocacy Board and Wex S. Malone American Inn of Court.
Tara is admitted to practice in all Louisiana state courts, the Louisiana Supreme Court, the United States District Courts for the Middle District of Louisiana and the Western District of Louisiana, and the United States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit.
