IRS Announces Federal Extension for Louisiana Residents

By: John McDermott

The IRS has announced that individual and business taxpayers in all 64 Louisiana parishes have been granted an automatic extension to June 15, 2021, to file federal individual and business tax returns and to make tax payments that were due on or after February 11, 2021, and before June 15, 2021. The extension is due to the winter storms occurring between Feb. 11-19, 2021, and following the disaster declaration issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The extension includes the following returns and payments:

  • Individual returns (1040) that would have been due April 15th.
  • Business returns, including the firm’s partnership return, that were otherwise due March 15th.
  • Individual estimated tax payments that would have been due April 15th.
  • Quarterly payroll and excise tax returns otherwise due April 30th (however, employment and excise tax deposits are not extended)
  • Contributions attributable to 2020 made to IRAs, qualified retirement plans (but does not appear to extend the due date for making HSA contributions attributable to 2020)
